polytheistic believing in many gods
cuneiform a word that means "wedge-shaped," it is the system of writing with a reed stylus on clay tablets invented by the Sumerian civilization for record-keeping
dynasty a family that rules and leadership is hereditary
pharaoh a word that means "great house" or "palace," it became the most common title for Egyptian monarchs
bureaucracy the people and procedures put in place to help a government handle all of its responsibilities
hieroglyphics a word meaning "priest-carvings" or "sacred writings," it is a complex form of writing using pictures and abstract forms used by the Egyptians on temple walls and in tombs
hieratic script a simplified form of hieroglyphics using dashes, strokes, and curves; it was the writing system used for business transactions and daily life, written on stone and then on paper made of papyrus
filial piety the duty of family members to put the desires of the male head of the family first
aristocracy an upper class in which wealth is determined by land ownership and power is hereditary
monsoon a seasonal wind that brings warm air and rain in summer and cold, dry air in winter on the Indian subcontinent
