hieroglyphics | a word meaning "priest-carvings" or "sacred writings," it is a complex form of writing using pictures and abstract forms used by the Egyptians on temple walls and in tombs |
hieratic script | a simplified form of hieroglyphics using dashes, strokes, and curves; it was the writing system used for business transactions and daily life, written on stone and then on paper made of papyrus |
filial piety | the duty of family members to put the desires of the male head of the family first |
aristocracy | an upper class in which wealth is determined by land ownership and power is hereditary |
monsoon | a seasonal wind that brings warm air and rain in summer and cold, dry air in winter on the Indian subcontinent |
