Vocabulary terms and definitions for creating and reading a map

cartographer a person who makes maps
map a flat diagram of the Earth's surface
scale unit of measure that gives the distance in miles or kilometers
legend lists map symbols and their meanings
geography the study of the Earth's physical and cultural features
atlas a book of maps and charts that gives information about the world
title tells what the map is about; the theme or subject
compass rose a circle showing the cardinal directions printed on a map or chart
meridians lines of longitude; measures the distance east and west from the prime meridian
parallels lines of latitude; measure the distance north and south from the equator
