Suffixes Related to Surgical Incisions

SuffixMeaning
-centesis to puncture or tap Ex: thoracentesis = puncture of the chest wall for aspiration of fluid
-ectomy removal Ex: tonsillectomy = removal of the tonsils
-stomy to form an opening Ex: colostomy = to make an opening in the colon
-tomy to cut into Ex: tracheotomy = to make an incision in the trachea
