| decubitus | lying down, especially in a bed; lateral decubitus is lying on the side (decumbo = to lie down) |
| prone | lying face down and flat |
| goniometer | instrument used to measure joint angles (gonio = angle) |
| atrophy | shrinking of muscle size |
| crepitation | grating sound sometimes made by movement of a joint or by broken bones; also called crepitus |
| hypotonia | reduced muscle tone or tension |
| herniated disk | protusion of a degenerated or fragmented intevertebral disk so that the nucleus pulposus protrudes, causing compression on the nerve root |
| muscular dystrophy | a category of genetically transmitted diseases characterized by progressive atrophy of skeletal muscles; Duchenne type is most common |
| rickets | osteomalacia in children ; causes bone deformity |
| osteoporosis | condtion of decreased bone density and increased porosity causing bones to become more brittle and to fracture more easily (porosis = passage) |
| osteomyelitis | infection of bone and bone marrow, causing inflammation |
| radionuclide organ imaging | an ionizing imaging technique using radioactive isotopes |
| arthrocentesis | puncture for aspiration of a joint |
| arthrodesis | binding or fusing of a joint |
| tenotomy | division of a tendon by incision to repair deformity caused by shortening of a muscle |
| traction | application of a pulling force to a fractured bone or dislocated joint to maintain proper position during healing |
| articulation | the point where two bones come together; also called joint |
| bursa | a fibrous sac between certain tendons and bones that is lined with a synovial membrane that secretes synovial fluid |
| fascia | a band or sheet of fibrous connective tissue that covers, supports, and separates muscle |
| tetany | tension; prolonged, continous muscle contraction |
| chondromalacia | softening of cartilage |
| bursectomy | excision of bursa |
