What are Medical Terms used to describe? describe parts of the body, body systems, injuries and diseases
Many, but not all, medical terms have what three parts? a prefix, a root, and a suffix
What is a Prefix? prefix is a word part that comes at the beginning of a word and helps you figure out something about the word's meaning.
What is a Root? it appears in the middle of a medical term if has a prefix. it is the main part of a term and describes the main concept of the term, the main part of the body
What is a Suffix? is the last part of a medical term. it provides information about the meaning of the medical term and often describes different procedures or conditions
What is a Combining Vowel? is vowel used to join two roots or a root and suffix. The vowel is often "o"
A Root shown with a combining vowel is a? Combining Form
What are the four steps to analyzing a medical term? 1) Start with the Suffix 2) Next, look at the Prefix 3) Look at the root(s) 4) Last, put it all together
True or False, Many medical terms do not contain three parts (prefix, root, and a suffix) True.
True or False, All medical terms have a root. False. Ex: anemia. it is composed of a prefix "an-" and a suffix "emia"
True or False, there are some medical terms that have two roots. True. Ex: lymphocytosis, "lymph" is the first root, and "cyto-" is the second
