Body Structure Intro

histology study of tissues
epithelial tissue covers surface of organs, makes up the outer layer of skin
connective tissue supports and connects other body tissues
muscle tissue provides contractile tissue which is responsible for movement
nervous tissue transmits electrical impulses as it relays information throughout the entire body
anatomical position body posture used to reference parts or divisions of the body
plane imaginary flat surface that divides the body into 2 sections
coronal plane divides the body into posterior and anterior sections
transverse plane divides the body into top and bottom sections
midsagittal plane divides the body into left and right halves
dorsal cavity located on the back of the body (posterior)
ventral cavity located on the front of the body (anterior)
cranial cavity skull, contains brain
spinal cavity formed by the backbone, includes spinal cord
meninges membranes that line cavities and cover the spinal cord and brain
diaphragm muscular wall that separates the thoracic cavity and the abdominopelvic cavity
abdominal cavity contains liver, stomach, intestines, kidneys
pelvic cavity contains urinary bladder and reproductive organs
quadrants and regions divide cavities into smaller areas
idiopathic disease disease whose cause is unknown
