Anatomy-Directional Terms
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| SUPERIOR | Toward the head end or upper part of body |
| INFERIOR | Away from the head end or toward the lower part of the body |
| ANTERIOR | Toward the front or belly side |
| POSTERIOR | Toward the back of the body |
| MEDIAL | Toward the midline, which is an imaginary line that extends vertically down the middle in front outside surface of the body |
| LATERAL | Away from the midline |
| SUPERFICIAL | Toward the surface of the body |
| DEEP | Inward from the surface of the body |
| PROXIMAL | Toward a structure’s origin or point of attachment to the trunk |
| DISTAL | Away from a structure’s origin or point of attachment to the trunk |
