Anatomy-Directional Terms

TermDefinition
SUPERIOR Toward the head end or upper part of body
INFERIOR Away from the head end or toward the lower part of the body
ANTERIOR Toward the front or belly side
POSTERIOR Toward the back of the body
MEDIAL Toward the midline, which is an imaginary line that extends vertically down the middle in front outside surface of the body
LATERAL Away from the midline
SUPERFICIAL Toward the surface of the body
DEEP Inward from the surface of the body
PROXIMAL Toward a structure’s origin or point of attachment to the trunk
DISTAL Away from a structure’s origin or point of attachment to the trunk
