| pleaura | membranes that surround lungs |
| diaphram | muscle that is responsible for ventilation and creating a pressure gradient in the thoracic cavity |
| cilia | hair-like projections that filter and remove foreign substances/mucus from lungs |

| rales | popping sounds when air enters airway |
| stridor | high pitched sound that occurs with obstruction to upper airway |
| cyanosis | blue coloration of skin due to lack of oxygenation |
| hypercapnea | high blood CO2 levels |
| hypoventilation | low ventilation rate |
| hypoxia | deficient amount of oxygen in tissue cells |
| pulmonary edema | fluid filling the spaces around alveoli |
| asthma | obstructive pulmonary disease caused by spasm of bronchioels |
| bronchitis | inflammation of bronchi |
| COPD | permanent, destructive pulmonary disorder that is a combination of emphysema and bronchitis |
| laryngospasm | spasm of laryngeal muscles causing constriction |
| pleurisy | inflammation of pleura |
| pneumothorax | air in the pleural cavity caused by puncture to chest wall |
| ABG | analysis of lung function by determining arterial gas levels |
| ausculation | use of a stethoscope to listen to the lungs (or other parts of body) |
| spirometry | measurement of lung volume and capacity |
| pulse oximetry | determines oxygen saturation in blood |
| chest x-ray | x-ray imaging to visualize chest cavity |
