GH Abbreviation for growth hormone
Gigantism A condition produced by hyper secretion of growth hormone during childhood development that leads to an abnormal overgrowth of bone
Thyroid/o Combining form meaning thyroid gland (shield)
Hormon/o Combining form meaning hormone (an urging on)
Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) Hormone that initiates the growth of ovarian follicles
Glucocorticoids Hormones that regulate carbohydrate metabolism and have anti-inflammatory effects
Insulin A hormone secreted by the beta cells of the islets of Langerhans that is responsible for regulating the metabolism of glucose
thyroxine (T4) Thyroid hormone that regulates metabolism
Islets of Langerhans of the pancreas Endocrine tissue within the pancreas
Continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) Use of insulin delivery device that is one on the body and subcutaneously infuses doses of insulin according to the individual needs of the diabetic patient
Hyperglycemia Abnormally high level of glucose in the blood
Catecholamines Hormones secreted by the adrenal medulla that affect the sympathetic nervous system in stress response
Antidiuretic hormone (ADH) Hormone released by the posterior pituitary that influences the absorption of water by kidney tubules (vasopressin)
Thym/o Combining form for thymus gland
PRL Abbreviation for prolactin
Calcitonin Hormone that regulates calcium and phosphorus metabolism
Luteinizing hormone (LH) Hormone that causes ovulation
Polyuria Excessive urination
Hypercalcemia An abnormally high level of calcium in the blood
Thyroid function study Measurement of thyroid hormone levels in blood plasma to determine the efficiency of glandular secretions including T3, T4, and TSH
Thymectomy Removal of the thymus
