Directional Terms

anterior, ventral in front of, the front surface of, toward the front of the body
caudal pertaining to the tail, toward the tail
cephalic, cranial pertaining to the head, toward the head
deep inside, toward the innermost part
distal away from the attachment point or beginning
inferior below, toward the feet
lateral to the side of, away from the midline
medial middle, toward the midline
posterior, dorsal in back of, the back surface of, toward the back of the body
proximal close to the attachment point or beginning
superficial outside, toward the outermost part
superior above, toward the head
