nystagmus | rapid oscillation of eyeballs |
scotoma | blind spot in vision |
astigmatism | distorted vision caused by oblong or cylindrical curve of lens or cornea that prevent light from being focused to a single spot on retina |
accomadation | ability of eye to focus on near objects |
amblyopia | decreased vison on early life |
aphakia | absence of a lens |
blepharochalasis | baggy eyelid |
ptosis | dropping of upper eyelid |
cataract | opaque clouding of lens |
diabetic retinopathy | disease of retina in people with diabetes that causes scarring and loss of vision |
entropion | inward folding of eyelid |
epiphora | abnormal overflow of tears |
glaucoma | group of diseases that cause increased IOP that puts pressure on optic nerve |
macular degeneration | breakdown of tissues in macula lutea that causes partial or complete loss of central vision |
pterygium | wing-shaped conjunctiva that extends over cornea |
strabismus | eye misalignment, cross-eyed or lazy eyes |
fluorescein angiography | visualization and photography of retinal and intraocular vessels with dye |
sonography | high-frequency sound waves to detect pathology in eye |
tonometry | use of a tonometer to measure IOP |
blepharoplasty | surgical repair of eyelid |
cryoretinopexy | intense cold to seal hole or tear in retina; to treat retinal detachment |
enucleanation | excision of eyeball |
LASIK | laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis; used to reshape surface of cornea |
scleral buckling | silicone band to cinch eyeball and reduce pull on retina |
