| Give 5 Major Categorical causes of thrombocytopenia | 1 Spurious, 2 Decreased Production, 3 Increased Destruction, 4 Dilutional, 5 Sequestration (Hypersplenism). |
| Thrombocytopenia - Conditions of Decreased production: | Aplastic anemia: congenital and acquired, Marrow infiltration: leukemia, disseminated cancer, Drug-induced: alcohol, thiazides, cytotoxic drugs, Infections: measles, HIV. Ineffective megakaryopoiesis: Megaloblastic anemia & Myelodysplastic syndromes |
| Thrombocytopenia - Conditions of Decreased platelet survival (Increased destruction) - Immunologic destruction: | idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, systemic lupus erythematosus, post-transfusion and neonatal. Drug-associated: quinidine, heparin (HIT), sulfa compounds. Infections: infectious mononucleosis, HIV infection, cytomegalovirus. |
| Thrombocytopenia - Conditions of Decreased platelet survival (Increased destruction)- Non-immunologic destruction: | Disseminated intravascular coagulation, Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura TTP, Giant hemangiomas, Microangiopathic hemolytic anemias |
| Thrombocytopenia - Drugs which cause decreased production: | Alcohol, thiazides, cytotoxic drugs. |
| Thrombocytopenia - Drugs which cause increased destruction: | quinidine, heparin, sulfa compounds |
