France surrenders | German troops push southeast into Paris and Italy attacks France from the south. France has fallen to the Germans |
Vichy France | Nazis set up a puppet government seemingly allowing French government in the South of France. Eventually the Germans move south into the area. |
Operation Sea Lion | Hitler's plans to invade GB with amphibious craft. British air force stops their advance and Germans withdraw |
Battle of Britain | German air force drops bombs on London and surrounding area for 57 nights--Blitz |
Operation Barbarossa | German plan to invade Russia. Fails because Russians burn their factories and an early winter |
Battle of Stalingrad | Russians stopped the German troops and encircled them. Winter came--Germans lost entire German Sixth Army |
US Neutrality | Americans did not want another war. Congress demanded neutrality, but US sent food, ships and weapons |
December 7, 1941 | Japanese attack American naval fleet at Pearl Harbor. (Look at the separate section for Pearl Harbor) and the Philippines |
December 8, 1941 | US declares war on Japan and Germany and Italy declare war on the US. US now fighting war on both fronts: European and the Pacific |
Battle of Midway | Six months after Pearl Harbor attack, US attacks the Japanese Fleet at Midway Island. US wins--turning point for the Pacific war. |
After the fall of Sicily | Mussolini is removed from office by the King of Italy who surrenders to the Allies |
Battle of Kursk | Largest tank battle of WWII between the Germans and the Russians. Russians defeat the Germans |
June 6, 1944 | D-Day: Allied landing on Normandy. US lands on Omaha Beach. Americans are able to move into France with the British and Canadians landing on other beaches. |
