first degree burn burn affecting only the epidermis or superficial layer of the skin
second degree burn deeper burn affecting both the epidermis and dermis
third degree burn deep burn affecting the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous layer
fourth degree burn deep burn affecting not just all layers of the skin, but also underlying tissue like muscle, fascia, or bone
