Terms needed for the EOC

TermDefinition
Push Factor This is a flaw or distress that drives a person away from a certain place. For example, war is a push factor because it pushes people from a place because of the danger.
Pull Factor This is something that pulls a person to a new place. It could be better jobs, healthcare, peace, etc. It is a benefit that draws people to an area.
Primary Source First-hand evidence of an event in history written by people who saw or experienced an event (examples: letters, diaries, government records)
Secondary Source Information or explanations created after a historical event by people who were not part of the historical event (examples: biographies, textbooks)
Polytheism Worship of many gods/goddesses or deities
Monotheism Belief in a single God
Five World Religions Hinduism, Judaism, Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam
Myths A story that people tell to explain their beliefs about the world and nature
Hymns Religious song/poem of praise to God or Gods/Godesses
Cultural Values A society's deeply held beliefs about what is most important to them
Architecture The design and construction of buildings and structures
Democracy A government system in which citizens vote on policies/laws or for people that will act as their representatives
Oligarchy A government system in which a small group of people rules
Dictatorship A form of ruling with total power over a country, typically one that has been taken by force
Monarchy A government system in which one person rules, known as the monarch. The monarch acts as the head of state and usually achieves this position through heredity.
Dynasty A sequence of rulers from the same family
Scarcity Shortage of supply, not enough to satisfy a want or need
Surplus Having more than is needed
Traditional Economy Based off of the beliefs, customs and traditions of the past
Command Economy Government leaders control the decisions of what and how many things are made
Market Economy All decisions are made by individuals or private businesses; large amount of individual freedom
Mixed Economy A mixture of command and market economies
Causes of Decline Geography, Politics, Economics
7 Continents North America, South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, and Antarctica
Social Hierarchy A system or organization in which people or groups are ranked one above the other according to status or authority
G. R. A. P. E. S. Geography, Religion, Achievements, Politics, Economics, and Social Structures
Agriculture Another word for farming; includes both growing and harvesting crops and also raising animals (livestock)
