The Interwar Years

League of Nations Organization of all signing countries of the Treaty of Versailles formed to mediate disputes between nations. US never signed the treaty so was not a member. It eventually failed
The Great Depression Hit industrialized countries in the late 1920s and lasted through the 1930's.
Reparations Large Payments ordered by the Treaty for the Germans to pay mainly to France.
Ruhr Valley Germany's industrial area which made money for them. The French took it over to get the reparations from the Germans.
Inflation Prices rise and no one buys, so overproduction is stored and the company loses.
Dawes Plan US lowered the reparation amount so Germany could make its payments and gave Germany a $200M loan.
US Stock Market Crash Overproduction, extended credit and linked economies with Europe which was also failing.
Aryan Race A superior race defined by Hitler as German and some other european.
Third Reich German government which Hitler hoped would rule Europe for centuries
Hitler's expansion plan Invade Russia and Russians would be the slaves to the Third Reich building roads and buildings
Hitler did not respect the Treaty --first step He built up the military--began a draft for the army and increased the air force. European leaders did nothing.
Hitler's second step Invaded the Rhineland--strip of land which was a DMZ demilitarized zone that separated Germany from France, the Netherlands and Belgium. Europe did nothing
Hitler's third step created alliances with Italy and . Europe did nothing.
Rome-Berlin Axis Germany's alliance with Italy. Sent troops to fight in Spain's Civil War under Franco
Anti-Comintern Pact Between Germany and Japan. If need be, the two countries would fight against Communism (Russia)
Hitler's 4th Step Germany forced Austria into placing a Nazi government in place of the current one. The army invaded Austria.
Hitler's 5th Step Germany annexed Sudetenland, a piece of land in Czechoslavakia. Europe did nothing.
Munich Conference Representatives from GB, Italy and France met with German leaders. They gave in to all Hitler's previous moves.
Neville Chamberlain Prime Minister of Great Britain who attended the Munich Conference. British people did not want war--just recovering from the Depression and building back Great Britain, so Chamberlain appeased Hitler.
Appeasement Giving into a force (like Germany) to avoid any reprisals or war.
Hitler's 6th Step Invaded rest of Checzoslavakia and demanded a port city in Poland--Dansk.
European reaction British and French made an alliance with Russia and promised Poland they would back them if Hitler attacked.
Nazi-Soviet Non-agression Pact Hitler also made alliance with Russia where the two countries agreed to never attack each other.
September 1, 1939 Hitler invaded Poland. Two days later, Great Britain and France declared war on Germany
Japan's Plan for a New Order Japan wanted China, Korea and Manchuria for the natural resources and to expand their empire like those in the Western world.
Japan's Plan against Russia To form an alliance with Germany and attack Russia together. Then they heard of the Non-Aggression Pact.

What did Japan do, not to appear the aggressor? Planned their own secret attack on their own railroad and said China did it. League of Nations knew their plan and condemned Japan. Japan withdrew from the League of Nations.
US warned Japan not to invade China Threatened economic sanctions if they moved on China

December 7, 1941 Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and destroyed the US Navy. Ten hours later they attacked the Philippines.
December 8, 1941 US declares war on Japan. Germany and Italy declare war on the US . US joins the Allied troops, GB, France and Russia
