When Did It Occur -Started around 1350CE in Italy -Ended 1600 in European States
What Started the Renaissance -Trade stimulated after the crusaders & introduced Europeans to new products
European Advancements -Brought Europeans into contact with new people, ideas, & culture -Promoted frequent contact between Byzantine & Muslim empires -New economic patterns & ideas developed
Center of Europe -Italy because of all of its trade ports
After the Crusades -Increased demand for Middle East goods -Increased production of goods to be traded in the Middle East -Increased use of credit and banking
Economic System -Instead of carrying cash, they created banking -Used letters of credit: kinda like a credit card -Extended supply of money & sped up trading
Economic System Introduced -Introduced new accounting & bookkeeping (Use of Arabic numerals)
Churches Opinion on Economic System -Did not agree with usury -Led to a secular Northern Italy -Kept religion separate from government & economy
Usury Lending money & charging interest on it
Secular Focusing on worldly matters rather than religious matters

Renaissance Art/Literature Focused on individuals & worldly matters along with Christianity

Michelangelo -Sculpted The David -Most famous work is the ceiling of Sistine Chapel at The Vatican
Francisco Petrarch -Italian -Humanist writer -Wrote "Love Poems to Laura" about a mystery woman
Northern Renaissance -Took longer to reach Northern Europe -Northern renaissance thinkers merged humanist ideas with Christianity
Erasmus -Christian humanist concerned about problems within the church -Wrote "The Praise of the Folly" -Used humor to expose the corruption & deception in the Catholic Church
Sir Thomas More -Humanist who pushed for social reform -Wrote "Utopia" about ideal society
Gutenberg -Books widely read due to the invention of the Gutenberg printing press -Could rapidly produce lots of books
Overall Effects -Produced new ideas in the arts, philosophy, & literature -Due to wealthy people these artistic endeavors spread rapidly -Education became secular (non-religious)
