Planes, quadrants, regions, directional/positional terms, cavities

TermDefinition
coronal/frontal plane slices the body into front and back
sagittal/longitudinal plane; median plane slices the body into left and right
parasagittal line half of the median plane on both sides of the body; slices near the medial part of the armpit down to the middle of the foot
RUQ (right upper quadrant) contains: liver, right lobe, gallbladder, bile duct, transverse colon (cut), and ascending colon
LUQ (left upper quadrant) contains: left lobe, stomach (cut) spleen, duodenum, pancreas, pancreatic duct, and descending colon
RLQ (right lower quadrant) contains: cecum, vermiform appendix
LLQ (left lower quadrant) contains: small intestine, rectum, anus
Right Hypochondriac region top right (patient's view) of the body regions
Left Hypochondriac region top left (patient's view) of the body regions
Right Lumbar region middle right (patient's view) of the body regions
Left lumbar region middle left (patient's view) of the body regions
Right inguinal/iliac region bottom right (patient's view) of the body regions
Left inguinal/iliac region bottom left (patient's view) of the body regions
