| Feudalism | A system where kings give land to nobles in exchange for service. |
| Manor | A large estate, often including farms and a village, ruled by a lord. |
| Serfs | Workers who were tied to the land on which they lived. They were also called peasants. |
| Saladin | Most famous and respected Muslim leader, who created a peace treaty with the Christians during the Crusades. |
| Middle Ages | A period of European history from 500-1500 AD. |
| nobility | A high-ranking social class. |
| Vikings | Invaders of Europe that came from Scandinavia. |
| lord | A landowner in the feudal system. |
| chivalry | Code of conduct for knights during the Middle Ages. |
| Black Death | A deadly plague that swept through Europe between 1347 and 1351. |
| Magna Carta | Document signed in 1215 that limits the rights of the English monarch. |

| Page | The first step of knighthood, about age 7. |
| Squire | The second stage of knighthood- about age 14. |
| castle | A large building usually with high, thick walls and towers that was built in the past to protect against attack. |
| crusade | A holy war. |
| Islam | A religion based on the teachings of the prophet Mohammed which stresses belief in one god. Followers are called Muslims. |
| Pope | Head of the Roman Catholic Church. |
| Byzantine Empire | Eastern half of the Roman Empire that survived the fall of the Western half. |
| Constantinople | A large and wealthy city that was the capital of the Byzantine empire. It is now known as Istanbul. |
| cathedral | A large and important church. |
| King | Head of feudalism and gives land to Nobles and gets protection/money in return. |
| Knight | A man who serves their noble as a soldier in armor. Receives land from their noble and in return gives protection. |
| fief | A piece of land land given to a vassal by a lord. |
| Medieval | Another name for the Middle Ages. |
| The Crusades | A long series of wars between Christians and Muslims. |
| vassal | A person granted land from a lord in return for services. |
| Roman Catholic Church | The branch of Christianity headed by the pope. |
| pandemic | An outbreak of a disease that occurs over a wide geographic area. |
| plague | An epidemic disease causing a high rate of death. |
