| Senate | A group of 300 men elected to govern Rome. |
| Consuls | Two very powerful elected leaders of Rome who shared command of the army. |
| Tribune | An official of Rome elected by plebeians to represent them. |
| Veto | To refuse to approve proposals of government. |
| Constitution | A set of basic laws (written down) by which Rome’s government ruled. |
| Checks and balances | A system that balances the distribution of power in a government. |
| Dictatorship | When the government is ruled by one person who has absolute power; Julius Caesar became a dictator which brought the Roman Republic to an end. |
| Colosseum | A large arena in Rome where gladiator contests and other games and sporting events were held. |
| Aqueducts | A pipe or channel built to carry water over a long distance. |
