TermDefinition
Renaissance "rebirth"; following the Middle Ages, a movement centered on the revival of interest in classical learning of Greece and Rome
Humanism An intellectual movement that focused on human potential and achievements
Realpolitik Political realism or practical politics, especially policy based on power rather than on ideals
Doctrine a belief or set of beliefs held and taught by a church, political party, or other group
Thirty Years War (1618-1648 CE) War within the Holy Roman Empire between German Protestants and their allies (Sweden, Denmark, France) and the emperor and his ally, Spain; ended in 1648 after tons of destruction with the signing of the Treaty of Westphalia
Enlightenment A movement in the 18th century (1700s) that advocated the use of reason in changing the accepted ideas and social institutions
Reason Logical thinking
Philosophy The study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence, especially when considered as an academic study
Social Contract An agreement between the people and their government, stating the consent of the people to be governed and the government to provide protections
Natural Rights The idea that humans are born with rights, which include the right to life, liberty, and property
