Louis XVI / Louis Capet | King of France during the French Revolution |
Marie Antoinette | Queen of France during the French Revolution. |
Girondins | A moderate faction within the National Assembly that wanted a constitutional monarchy. |
Montagnards | An extremely radical political faction. They sat in the highest part of the National Assembly and were named after Mountains. |
Jacobins | The name of a social club that became a popular political faction during the French Revolution. They were responsible for 'The Terror' |
Marquis de Lafayette | A French Noble that fought in the American Revolution and helped compose the "Declaration of Rights of Man and of the Citizen" |
Maximillian Robespierre | The leader of the Jacobins. He was called the 'Incorruptible' because he was thought to be so purely for democracy. He and his Committee of Public Safety were responsible for 'The Terror' |
Bastille | A Large French prison in the center of Paris. It was feared by people because of the awful torture that happened there. It was also the storage spot for all the gunpowder in Paris. |
Estates General | How the French people were divided by class and birth in French Society before the French Revolution. |
1st Estate | The Catholic Clergy in France. They represented less than 1% of the population and owned roughly 10% of the land. Paid little to no taxes. |
2nd Estate | The Aristocracy / Nobility in France. They represented less than 2% of the population owned roughly 20% of the land and paid no taxes. |
3rd Estate | Everyone that was not born into nobility or part of the Clergy. Peasants, poor urban workers, merchants, and the Bourgeoise |
Aristocracy | Those that were born into families with noble titles. The 2nd Estate. |
Guillotine | An invention created to 'mercifully' and 'democratically' execute people. |
National Assembly | France's first group of elected officials that met on a tennis court to write a new constitution. |
Committee of Public Safety | Created by the National Convention in 1793 with the intent to defend the nation against foreign and domestic enemies, as well as to oversee the new functions of the executive government |
