| aristocrat | A wealthy person/noble |
| hereditary | passed down within the family |
| ancestor | a family member/relative, usually one who has died |
| pictograph | A picture or drawing representing words |
| ideograph | a character that joins two or more pictographs to represent an idea |
| bureaucracy | A large, complex organization composed of appointed officials |
| Mandate of Heaven | the belief that the Chinese king's right to rule came from the gods |
| Dao | The Path or The Way |
| Confucianism | a belief system based on the teachings of Chinese philosopher Confucius that stressed treating one another humanely and honoring one's family |
| Daoism | Chinese philosophy that accepts the world as they find it, avoids struggles, and stays as much as possible on 'the way' or 'path' of nature. |
| Legalism | the belief that people were bad by nature and needed to be controlled |
| filial piety | respect shown by children for their parents and elders |
| censor | an official who watches others for correct behavior |
| currency | Coins and paper bills used as money |
| civil service | The part of a bureaucracy that oversees the day to day business of running a government. Under Han Wudi, people were chosen based on their skills, not on their family connections or social class |
| tenant farmer | Farmer who works land owned by another and pays rent either in cash or crops |
| acupuncture | Chinese medical practice of inserting needles into certain areas of the body |
| silk road | An ancient trade route between China and the Mediterranean Sea extending some 6,440 km (4,000 mi) and linking China with the Roman Empire. |
