| Environment | area around us in which we live |
| River | a body of water that flows into a larger body of water |
| Sea | a large body of saltwater that is surrounded in whole or in part by land |
| Ocean | a large body of saltwater that covers nearly three fourths of the surface of the Earth |
| Plain | a broad area of flat land |
| Mountain | a large landform that stretches above the surrounding land |
| Desert | a hot and dry area of land with little rain or vegetation (plants) |
| Migration | movement from one place to another |
| Prehistory | time before humans had a written language |
| Artifacts | objects made by humans like tools, buildings, weapons, art, pottery, and clothing that are usually found and studied by archaeologists |
| Archaeology | study of the past through what has been left by behind |
| Anthropology | study of the origins and development of people and their society |
| Forage | to look for food |
| Hunting and gathering | the act of getting one’s food by killing wild animals and collecting wild fruit, vegetables, and nuts |
| Nomad | a person who moves from one place to another following food sources |
| Nomadic | the characteristic of moving from place to place staying in one place temporarily |
| Paleolithic Era | having to do with the Old Stone Age, the time period from 2 million B.C.E. to about 10,000 B.C.E., characterized by the use of stone tools |
