Why did the British, French and German people favor Absolutism at first? An absolute ruler brought order to chaos and death
Why did Absolutism eventually lose the peoples' favor? The Enlightenment philosophers educated the Bourgeoisie; and the remainder of the Third Estate were weighed under with unfair financial burdens while the monarch kept luxury spending.
Why was representation in the Estates General unfair? Clergy and Nobles had 300 reps each = 600 The Third Estate with 97% of the population only had 600 reps The First and Second Estates could block the Third Estate's votes
What was the King's original idea to raise more money? To remove the Second Estate's (Nobles) tax exemption and demand they pay taxes.
How did the King expect to accomplish this? He thought the First Estate (Clergy) would vote with the Third Estate and the vote would be 900 in favor and 300 against.
Why did the vote fail? The First Estate thought the King would come for them next to remove their exemption, so they joined the Nobles and blocked the vote.
What was the King's only alternative now to raise more money? To tax the Third Estate more : (
What did the Third Estate reps do when the vote went against them at the meeting? They left and formed their own group, the National Assembly.
Locked out of the meeting room, where did the members of the National Assembly go to draft their Constitution? An indoor tennis court where they made the Tennis Court Oath to remain until they drafted the Constitution
July 14, 1789? 8,000 people of the Third Estate stormed the Bastille. They took weapons and ammunition and set political prisoners free
What was the Great Fear? After the Bastille, the peasants heard rumors that the King was calling in foreign troops to stop their revolution. They were paranoid and began fighting each other, as well as the Nobles.

After the execution of the King, what mechanism was put into place to keep law and order in France? The National Assembly appointed a 12 member Committee of Public Safety with Robespierre at the Head
Was the Committee of Public Safety an oxymoron? Yes, the committee executed 40,000 French citizens in one year, 16,000 of them at the guillotine
What was the name of the new Republic of France changed by Robespierre and explain it The Republic of Virtue which was intended to de-Christianize the country. Churches were closed. Notre Dame was called the Temple of Reason where debates and lectures were held. A new calendar was created according to the seasons/weather.
What was the reason for Robespierre's execution? He wanted to execute two members of the Directory (the new name of the National Assembly) who were good friends of the leaders of the Directory. They, in turn, realized he had too much power, and had him beheaded at the guillotine.
Why was the aftermath of Robespierre's execution a period of chaos and corruption? The Directory opened up the churches and put back the old calendar. The country returned to former chaos of the Royalists v. the Radicals and corruption ran rampant
What event quelled this chaotic, corrupt period? A coup d'etat led by Napoleon occurred, and he took over leadership of the country.
