The Classical Age

about the Classical Age of Rome, Greece, China, and India.

what is a "polis"? a Greek city-state; basic political & institutional unit of Greece
what is an "acropolis"? an elevated point in the city
what is an "agora"? a Greek marketplace
what are the Illiad and the Odyssey? epic poems written by Homer; includes Greek history and legend
what is the Theogony? it tells the history of the Greek gods, esp. Zeus; written by Hesiod
what are "hoplites"? Greek foot soldiers
what is a monarchy? Greek for "the rule of one man," a king represented the community, reigning according to law and respecting the rights of the citizens.
what is an aristocracy? Greek for "power in the hands of the best."
what is an oligarchy? Greek for "the rule of a few;" a small group of wealthy citizens, not necessarily of aristocratic birth.
what is a democracy? through the rule of the people; all citizens, regardless of birth or wealth, administered the workings of the government.
what is the Archaic Age? between 800-500 BCE; Sparta and Athens rose to prominance
what is the Classical Period? between 500-338 BCE; Greek civilization reached its highest peak in politics, thought, and art.
what is the Delian League? a grand naval alliance aimed at liberating Ionia from Persian rule in 478 BCE.
