Lay Investiture This is the practice where some kings and nobles were claiming that it was their right not only to appoint church officials but also to invest them with their religious authority.
Simony The buying and selling of religious of blessed articles or goods, which at the time extended even to the selling of church offices.
Friars "brothers" that labored to bring about reform by living and preaching amoung the people
Mendicant Orders What friars referred to when they begged for their daily sustenance
Excommunication Punishement of an individual by depriving him of the sacrament and excluding from the fellowship of the church
Interdict The suspension of public church services and the adminstration of all sacraments (except baptism and extreme unction)
Inquisition A special court commisioned by the pope to stomp out heresy
Duke Local tribal leaders that assumed the role of protectors.
Duchy This was the territory that the duke ruled.
Holy Roman Empire The German empire became known as this.
Shire Local districts or country's.
Tenants-in-chief These were military followers, feudal vassals.
Indictment The list of people that have been accused.
Common Law This not only helped insure justice but also helped to draw the English people together into a unified nation.
Witan an assembly of the great men of the kingdom.
Curia Regis A feudal body composed of his chiefs vassals.
"Power of the Purse" This is where the parliment had the power over the money.
Baillis These were new feudal officials whom the King appointed and paid.
Estates-General This is the meetings of the representatives from the church, nobility, and townspeople. The king got advice.
Crusades These were military companions that were marked by the cross.
