Mesopotamia Section 1 (21-22)

QuestionAnswer
Why did people settle near water? They settled near water because that is where the crops would grow best. When water was available, and regular floods occurred, the soil would become richer and more fertile for crops.
What does Mesopotamia mean? It means "between the rivers" in Greek.
What are the two most important physical features of Mesopotamia? The Tigris and Euphrates rivers.
What is the Fertile Crescent? A large arc of rich, or fertile, farmland.
What do we call a mixture of rich soil and tiny rocks? Silt
What is irrigation? Why was it so helpful? Irrigation is a way of supplying water to an area of land. Irrigation helped the farmers control the rivers' flow so that it didn't destroy their crops.
What do we call an over abundance of food (more than we need)? A surplus
What are canals? What was their importance? Canals are human-made waterways. They protected houses from flooding and moved water to their fields.
What do we call the type of arrangement in which each worker specializes in a particular task or job? Division of labor
Fertile Crescent a large arc of rich or fertile farming land.
