Mughal Dynasty | Muslim rulers of India, most showed religious tolerance toward their subjects |
Akbar the Great | Golden age ruler of Mughal India. Honored for religious tolerance |
caste system | Strict social structure of India. You are born into a caste (social ) and the only way to move up is to have good karma and dharma in this life time. When you die you can move up to the next caste. If you have bad karma/dharma you can move down. |
Karma | What goes around comes around. If you do good, good comes back to you. Opposite is true too. |
Dharma | your duty, or responsibilities based on your position in society. |
reincarnation | The concept of being reborn into another life/body after death. |
Siddhartha Gautama | founder of Buddhism, Buddha the enlightened one |
Four Noble Truths | There is suffering; suffering is caused by desire; control desire to end suffering; do what is right to control desire |
Eight Fold Path | Guide to living right; right speech, right concentration, right effort; etc |
Nirvana | Escape from the cycle of reincarnation; goal of Buddhism |
Marco Polo | Italian explorer who traveled to China in the 1200s. Europeans thought he was a liar when he told them how awesome and advanced China was. |
Ming Dynasty | Ruling family of China from 1368-1644; during this time China reached a golden age, was self-sufficient and made luxury goods to sell to other countries. |
Civil Service Exam | test started by the Chinese in order to limit corruption in government. Only people who pass the test could have government jobs. |
Tribute system | Used to show dominance of one country over others. The smaller/weaker countries were required to give their best goods (including women) as gifts to the dominant country. |
Admiral Zheng He | Chinese naval explorer who sailed to India, the Middle East and Africa from 1405-1423. The Chinese government stopped funding the voyages because they cost too much and no other country sold valuable things |
Silk Road | network of roads that allowed trade to happen from China to the Black Sea. |
Confucianism | based on 5 principle relationships; each person should act with respect and responsibility in a relationship |
Daoism/Taoism | The way of nature or the universe/ go with the flow Lao Zi Founder |
Aztec Empire | located in Mexico, warrior tribe that conquered neighbors; chinampa agriculture; ritual sacrifice to gods; polytheistic |
Chinampas | agricultural technique used by Aztecs; crops were grown on man-made "floating" islands in the middle of Lake Texcoco. |
Inca | South American empire found in the Andes Mountains, absolute ruler; strict control of society and all conquered people; no writing system; advanced architecture; Capital at Cuzco |
quipu | record keeping system of knotted rope and string used by the Inca |
Terrace farming | Incan system of agriculture; this involved creating a step-like landscape on the mountainsides to grow crops |
Mansa Musa | Leader of Mali; possibly the richest ruler in the world famous for his pilgrimage to Mecca where he spent so much gold it caused inflation the world market |
Ibn Battuta | Muslim explorer who traveled from Africa to China and wrote a detailed description of his travels in the 1300s |
Mehmed II | founder of the Ottoman Empire; conquered Constantinople in 1453 |
Janissaries | European Christian boys who were taken by the Ottoman Empire, castrated and turned into elite soldiers for the Ottoman sultans |
Abraham | Founder of Judaism, world’s oldest monotheistic religion; his children would produce the line that led to Christianity through Jesus and Islam through Muhammad. |
Muhammad | Muslims believe he is the last and greatest prophet of Allah, Founder of Islam |
Jesus | Christians believe he is the son of God, Founder of Christianity; he dies so sins could be forgiven |
