World War I terms and defnitions

| Ottoman Empire | An central powers empire that included the countries Austria-Hungary and Germany. |
| All Quiet on the Western Front | A book that described the German soldiers during the war. |
| Archduke Franz Ferdinad | The Archduke of Austria-Hungary that got assinated and caused Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia. |
| Lusitania | A British passenger liner that got torpedoed by a German U-Boat. |
| Jeanette Rankin | She was the First Female Member of the U.S. Congress. |
| Serbia | A country that killed the Archduke. |
| Pacifist | A person opposed to the use of war or violence to settle disputes. |
| alliance systems | Systems that made alliances between different countries such as, France and Greta Britain. |
| Central Powers | An alliance system that was made up of the countries Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire. |
| Reparations | Payment by a defeated agressor nation for damgages caused by war. |
| antiwar | Not wanting to have war. |
| Ration | To give out scarce items on a limited basis. |
| Allied Powers | An alliance system that include the countries Great Britain, France, Russia, and later the USA. |
| Armistice | A temporary peace agreement to end fighting. |
| nationalism | Intense loyalty to one's nation or group and promotion of its interests above all others. |
| imperialism | The actions used by one nation to exercise political or econmomic control over smaller or weaker nations. |
| propaganda | Ideas or information designed and spread to influence opinion. |
| Kaiser | Emperor; the leader of Germany from 1871 to 1918. |
| militarism | A buildup of military strength within a country. |
| patriotism | Devoted love, support, and defense of one's country; national loyalty. |
| passivism | To be opposed to war or violence to settle an arguement. |
| neutrality | The state of being neutral. |
| isolationism | A national policy of avoiding involvement in world affairs. |
| mobilization | Gathering resources and preparing for war. |
| Convoy | A group that travels with something, such as a ship, to protect it. |
| Treaty of Versailles | It was a peace treaty to end the war between the Allied Powers and Germany. |
| Fourteen Points | A speech delivered by President Wilson to congress on January 8, 1918. |
| Henry Cabot Lodge | Lodge was the head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and strongly opposed the peace treaty proposed by President Wilson. |
| League of Nations | LON was a inter-governmental organization founded after the Treaty of Versailles. |
| Selective Service Act | Was the act that that said men ages 21 to 30 were drafted into the war. |
