Directional Terms:

QuestionAnswer
Anatomic Position A person standing upright with arms at the sides, palms are forward
Midline A line running from the nose through the navel, dividing the body into a right & left half.
Superior Closer to the head. Also known as cephalic or cephalad.
Inferior Closer to the feet. Also known as caudal or caudad
Anterior Toward the front of the body. Also known as ventral.
Posterior Toward the back of the body. Also known as Dorsal.
Planes Flat surfaces of the body.
How many planes does the body have? 3 (Sagittal, Frontal, Transverse)
Sagittal Plane Oriented vertically & divides the body into right & left areas
Frontal plane Oriented vertically & divides the body into anterior & posterior areas. Also known as the coronal plane.
Transverse plane Oriented horizontally dividing the body into superior & inferior areas. Also known as the horizontal plane.
Coronal plane Divides the body into anterior & posterior areas. Also known as the frontal plane.
Horizontal Plane Oriented horizontally dividing the body into superior & inferior areas. Also known as a transverse plane.
Cephalic or Cephalad Closer to the head. Also known as Superior.
Caudal or Caudad Closer to the feet. Also known as Inferior.
Ventral Toward the front of the body. Also known as Anterior.
