[MA1] The Circulatory System [Tier 03] - Disease and Disorders (Blood)
Term | Definition |
---|---|
anemia | condition in which you lack enough healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen to your body's tissues. |
iron-deficiency anemia | lack of red blood cells caused by insufficient iron which is necessary for the body to make red blood cells. |
anemia of chronic disease | refers to having low levels of red blood cells as a result of autoimmune diseases or other chronic illnesses. |
pernicious anemia | a rare blood disorder characterized by the inability of the body to utilize cobalamin, which is essential for the development of red blood cells. |
aplastic anemia | a condition in which the bone marrow does not produce enough red blood cells. |
autoimmune hemolytic anemia | in people with this condition, an overactive immune system destroys the body's own red blood cells |
thalassemia | an inherited blood disorder that causes your body to have less hemoglobin than normal inhibiting your red blood cells from being able to carry oxygen |
sickle cell anemia | a genetic condition causing red blood cells to change shape and become sticky, stiff and to potentially obstruct blood flow resulting in clots and cell death. |
polycythemia vera | a type of blood cancer resulting in the bone marrow producing excess red blood cells which thicken your blood, slowing its flow potentially causing serious problems, such as clots. |
malaria | a parasitic infection of the blood causing red blood cells to periodically rupture causing fever, chills and organ damage |
lymphoma | a form of blood cancer developing in the lymph system results in which blood cells becoming malignant, multiplying and spreading abnormally. |
leukemia | a form of blood cancer in which white blood cells may become malignant and multiply inside the bone marrow or lymphatic tissue |
multiple myeloma | a type of blood cancer in which a plasma cell becomes malignant, multiplies and releases damaging substances that eventually cause organ damage |
myelodysplastic syndrome | a group of blood cancers in which immature blood cells in the bone marrow do not mature or become healthy blood cells |
idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura | A condition causing a persistently low number of platelets in the blood, due to an unknown cause. |
heparin-induced thrombocytopenia | a low platelet count caused by a reaction to blood thinner |
thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura | a rare blood disorder causing platelets to form small blood clots in blood vessels resulting in lower platelet count |
essential thrombocytosis | a condition where the body produces too many platelets resulting in the platelets to not work properly, resulting in excessive clotting and/or bleeding |
hemophilia | a genetic bleeding disorder in which the blood does not clot properly. |
von Willebrand disease | a condition where the body produces scanty or ineffective VWF protein, which assists with clotting, |
deep venous thrombosis | a blood clot occurring in a deep vein |
raynaud's disease | a condition in which blood vessels in your fingers or toes temporarily overreact to low temperatures or stress |
