What happened in Medina? Where Muhammad had to flee in order to escape murder by Mecca's merchants. The city was named after him meaning "city of the prophet" in Arabic.

How important is the Kabaa now to Muslims? It is the centerpiece for Muslim worship.
Where did Islam spread? From the Arabian Peninsula across Asia and Africa and into Spain.

What is the name of the holy text of Islam? Quran
What are the 5 Pillars of Islam? Declaration of God; Daily Prayer ; giving charity to the poor; Fasting from sunrise to sunset during the holy month of Ramadan, All Muslims who are able must make a pilgrimage, or hajj, to Mecca at least once in their lives
What is a hajj? Pilgrimage to Mecca
How often are Muslims expected to pray? 5 times a day
What is Ramadan? The holy month
Who else do Muslims accept as prophets of God? Moses and Jesus
How did Islam spread from Mecca and Medina? Trade
What two previous empires (that we have talked about) does Islam spread to? Persia & Byzantine
What is the major difference between Sunni and Shiite Muslims? They disagreed on who should be the next Caliph.
Does this split still exist today? Yes
What beliefs remain the same between Sunni and Shia’ Muslims? Believe in one God, look to the Quran for advice, and make the pilgrimage to Mecca.
Why is Jerusalem seen as a holy city for Muslims? It is the site where Muhammad is believed to have ascended into heaven

What city became the capital of the Muslim Empire under the Umayyad Dynasty? Damascus
Where in Europe did Islam spread? All the way to Spain.
