| aristocracy | a hereditary class of rulers |
| tenant farmer | People who paid rent either in money or crops to be able to grow crops on someone else's land |
| metic | someone who lived in a Greek city-state but was a foreigner |
| slavery | the ownership and control of other people |
| oligarchy | political power is held by a small group of people |
| phalanx | a formation of heavily armed foot soldiers who moved together as a unit |
| tyranny | governments ruled by a strong leader |
| democracy | "ruled by the people" |
| citizenship | a member of a community |
| direct democracy | a political system in which citizens participate directly in decision making |
| representative democracy | citizens elect others to represent them in government. |
| ephor | people elected to the Spartan assembly who were responsible for the day to day operation of the government |
| helot | slaves owned by the polis of Sparta |
| military state | a society organized for the purpose of waging war |
| barracks | military housing |
