tyranny governments ruled by a strong leader
democracy "ruled by the people"
citizenship a member of a community
direct democracy a political system in which citizens participate directly in decision making
representative democracy citizens elect others to represent them in government.
ephor people elected to the Spartan assembly who were responsible for the day to day operation of the government
helot slaves owned by the polis of Sparta
military state a society organized for the purpose of waging war
barracks military housing
