Diagnosis Cluster

QuestionAnswer
a group of two or more ICD-10-CA codes that relate to one another. Assigning the same character (uppercase alpha character A to Y) to each of the codes in this group is the mechanism that links these codes together on the abstract. Diagnosis cluster
It is mandatory to apply a diagnosis cluster, when a code from the following categories is assigned: • External causes related to medical and surgical care complications (Y40–Y84); and • Resistance to antibiotics (U82 and U83) and other antimicrobial drugs (U84).
Coders must assign the same diagnosis cluster character (uppercase alpha character A to Y) to all codes within the: Same diagnosis cluster
When there are two or more diagnosis clusters on the abstract, the coder must use: a different uppercase alpha letter A to Y for the codes within the cluster.
The purpose of the diagnosis cluster for a drug-resistant microorganism infection is to: link resistance to a specific drug with the microorganism and the infection site with which the drug resistance is associated
There is no limit to the number of codes assigned to the same diagnosis cluster. What is the limit to the number of codes that can be assigned to the same diagnosis cluster.
Should a diagnosis cluster be applied when there is a post-intervention condition documented? Yes, it is mandatory for post-intervention conditions regardless of diagnosis type assignment.
Is an application of a diagnosis cluster required for an adverse effects in therapeutic use? Yes, it is mandatory for adverse effects in therapeutic use.
