Classification Standards- Diagnosis Typing Definitions for DAD

TermDefinition
Diagnosis Type M Most responsible diagnosis -the one diagnosis or condition that can be described as being most responsible for the patient’s stay in hospital
Diagnosis Type (1) Pre-Admit Comorbidity - represents a condition that existed prior to admission, has been assigned an ICD-10-CA code and has been determined to meet at least one of the three criteria for significance.
Diagnosis Type (2) Post-Admit Comorbidity - represents a condition that arose post-admission, has been assigned an ICD-10-CA code and has been determined to meet at least one of the three criteria for significance.
Diagnosis Type (3) a secondary diagnosis or condition for which a patient may or may not have received treatment, that has been assigned an ICD-10-CA code and that does not meet any of the three criteria for significance.
Diagnosis Type (4) Morphology Codes - derived from ICD-O (International Classification of Diseases—Oncology) codes describing the type and behavior of neoplasm. Codes are found in the Morphology of Neoplasms Chapter.
Diagnosis Type (5) Admitting Diagnosis used when it differs from MRDx code. Use is determined at the jurisdictional or facility level. Coders should refer to the DAD and facility policies to determine jurisdictional or facility requirement for using this diagnosis type.
Diagnosis Type (6) Proxy most responsible diagnosis is assigned to a designated asterisk code in a dagger/asterisk convention when the condition it represents fulfills the requirements stated in the definition for diagnosis type (M)—MRDx.
Diagnosis Types (W), ( X) and (Y) Service transfer diagnoses - an ICD-10-CA code associated with the first (W), second (X) or third (Y) service transfer, respectively. The use of this diagnosis type is determined at the jurisdictional or facility level.
Diagnosis Type (9) External cause of injury code (Chapter XX–External Causes of Morbidity and Mortality), place of occurrence code (U98.– Place of occurrence) or activity code (U99.– Activity).
Diagnosis Type (O) Newborn - Diagnoses codes restricted to newborn abstracts only (Admit category N). Healthy infant with MRDx code from category Z38 Liveborn infants according to place of birth, any other codes entered on the newborn abstract must be diagnosis type (0).
Diagnosis Type (7), (8) Restricted to CIHI—DO NOT USE
