primogeniture the right by law or custom for the firstborn son to inherit his parent's entire or main estate.
bourgeoisie a legally defined class of the middle ages Europe that was analogous to the "Middle class".
dialects regional speaking ways or languages
vernacular languages language of a specific population or national group
schism is a division between people, usually belonging to an organization, movement, or religious domination.
icon a religious painting depicting figures in Christianity. Venerated by Orthodox christians in religious ceremonies.
iconoclasm destruction of religious icons and other images or monuments for religious or political motives
Eastern Orthodox the Christian religion of Eastern Europe; included Greece and Russia
Patriarch the title given to leadership in Orthodox Christianity
caesaropapism the idea of combining the power of secular government with the religious power, or making it superior to the spiritual authority of the church; the form of government in the Byzantine Empire.
Gothic a style of Medieval art that developed in Northern France out of Romanesque art in the 12th century AD
Theme system the political and military division of the Byzantine empire in which a general was both military and civil ruler of a province in the empire.
Guilds associations of artisans or merchants who control the practice of their craft in a particular town.
manorial system the organization of large estates, or manors, into economically self sufficient units
Three field system a crop rotation that was used in medieval and early Modern Europe- a practice of growing different types of crops in the same are in sequential seasons.
Holy Roman Empire a large estate in central Europe that was made up of smaller principalities and kingdoms that owned their allegiance to the king of the Romans.
