After the Procedure

Evacuated Tube & Butterfly Phlebotomy Procedures

Numerical OrderProcedure
1 Procedure In the patient's presence, label specimens, using preprinted labels or handwritten ones (patient's first & last name, ID#, date, time of collection, & health care worker's initials).
2 Procedure Ask the patient to reconfirm identity on the labeled specimens.
3 Procedure Properly dispose of contaminated gauze and/or other contaminated supplies.
4 Procedure Keep an eye on the patient for syncope.
5 Procedure Place specimen tubes in an appropriate container for safe transport to the laboratory.
6 After the Procedure Assure that contaminated supplies & equipment have been disposed of in the correct containers.
7 After the Procedure Double-check to make sure that the bleeding has stopped.
8 After the Procedure Wash or sanitize hands.
9 After the Procedure Thank the patient for cooperating.
10 After the Procedure Depart with all blood samples and all remaining supplies.
11 After the Procedure Do not leave anything at the patient's bedside.
12 After the Procedure Deliver the samples to the appropriate locations for laboratory testing.
