Phlebotomy Procedure

Reducing Pain & Crying Time During a Procedure

Numerical OrderProcedure
Up to 6 months old Sucrose (a sugar)
25% solution 4 teaspoons of water with 1 teaspoon of sugar
Administration Oral syringe, dropper, nipple, or on a pacifier.
Given 2 minutes before heelsticks
Lasts About 5 mins
Infants shown to be More alert after the procedure, less fussy, and cry for a shorter duration.
