Leaving the Patient
Phlebotomy Procedures
| Numerical Order | Procedure |

| 1 Rationale | Assure that the patient is no longer bleeding, does not feel faint, and has no further complications related to the venipuncture procedure. |
| 2 Rationale | Reverify identity of the specimens with the actual patient. |
| 3 Procedure | Observation of the site for 5 to 10 secs assures that the bleeding has stopped and the patient is recovering. Check for hematoma formation, blood leakage, or excessive bleeding. |
| 4 Procedure | Continue to apply pressure until all signs of bleeding have stopped, or call for a nurse or supervisor if bleeding complications appear serious. |
| 5 Procedure | Once there is assurance that the bleeding stopped and that the patient does not feel faint, a bandage should be applied. |
| 6 Procedure | Ensure that all tubes are appropriately labeled: Initials Time Date Ask the patient to double-check that the sample labels indicate his or her name. |
| 7 After the Procedure | Cleanse hands again. |
| 8 After the Procedure | Remove all items that were brought in or appropriately discard used supplies. |
| 9 After the Procedure | Prepare the specimens for transportation. |
| 10 After the Procedure | Thank the patient. |
