Mentally Preparing

Mentally Preparing for the Patient Encounter

Numerical OrderProcedure
1 Rationale Focus on the importance of the individual patient. Prepare for that specific venipuncture procedure.
2 Preparation Prepare and assemble PPE, phlebotomy supplies, test requisitions, writing pen, barcode reader/scanner, and appropriate patient information before the patient encounter and prior to the venipuncture process.
3 Procedure Use the cleansing breath to center your attention on the upcoming venipuncture task. As you exhale, try to disconnect from distracting factors in your personal life or in the workplace.
4 Procedure Direct your attention to any special circumstances or needs for the patient. A smile may help put the patient at ease.
5 Procedure "Hello, I'm _______." State your department and "I'm here to collect blood, for laboratory testing."
6 Procedure Wash or sanitize your hands, and then put on gloves.
