Give three advantages of winter variety seeds. Frost resistant, longer growing season and a higher yield of crops.
What are the 4 properties of a certified seed? it must have a minimum germination rate 85%, a minimum purity rate of 98%, must be treated with fungicide and pesticide and be free of wild oat seed.
Identify 4 factors which affect crop production. soil and water, seed variety selections, previous crop history and weed, disease and pests control.
Give 2 reasons for the importance of crop rotation. it prevents a build up of pests and diseases and improves the nutrient management.
How can pests and disease of any crop build up in the soil? if you dont use crop rotation, the pests can accumulate in the soil for years.
Explain how crop rotation can control pests and weeds. when you plant a different crop each year, it controls pests and weeds because the crops have different pests and weeds.
name three methods of weed, disease and pest control. biological, direct and indirect control.
what is the difference between the non selective and selective herbicide? a non selective herbicide kills all weeds and a selective herbicide only kills one weed.
what is a contact herbicide? it is a herbicide that only kills what it touches.
what is a translocated herbicide? it is a herbicide that kills the root of the plant.
what is a residual herbicide? it is put on the soil and kills germinating seeds.
What is a fungicide? a fungicide kills or inhibits the growth of fungi
name two types of fungicides. contact fungicide and translocated fungicide.
three reason a farmer might not use chemicals on a farm? a build up of toxins in the food chain, harm to human health and pollution of air.
what are quarantine diseases? infectious bacterial diseases that cause considerable damage to crops.
