This is a flashcards game that will help memorize Islamic Vocab

TermDefinition
Shirkh The ruler of an Arabic tribe, usually selected from one of the leading families by a council of elders.
Allah Arabic for God; used by both Christian and Muslim Arabs
Revelations divine truths that are revealed through religious experiences
Qur'an Holy scriptures of the religion of Islam
Islam monotheistic religion that emerges on the Arab peninsula in the 7th Century c.e., (Submissions of God")
Muslim s person who believes in Islam ("One who submits")
Hijrah The journey of Muhammad and his followers to Medina in 622 c.e.; the date of the starting year of the Muslim calendar
Bedouin a nomadic Arab who lives in the Arabian, Syrian, or n=North African dessert.
Hajj A pilgrimage to Mecca, one of the requirements of the five pillars of Islam.
Shariah A law code drawn up by the Muslim scholars after Muhammad's death; it provided believers with a set of practical laws to regulate their daily lives
Caliph the spiritual successor to Muhammad
Jihad struggle in the way of God; sometimes referred to as a "sixth" pillar of Islam.
Vizier a high government official in ancient Egypt or in Muslim countries.
Sultan "holder of power"; the military and political head of state under the Seljuk Turks and the Ottomans
Hadith saying attributed to Muhammad; some importance, bur not authoritative as the Qur'an
Dar al Islam House of Islam- a term used to describe the Islamic worlda
Jizya A tax imposed by Islamic caliphs on people who refused to convert to Islam
Madrasas institutions of higher learning in the Islamic world
Ulama a religious and legal scholar
Sufis Muslim mystics who focuses more on relationships with Allah that was based on ecstatic singing or dancing than a religious doctrine.
Qibla the direction facing the Kaaba, in Mecca the muslims must pray.
