Apothecary Latin term for pharmacist; also a place were drugs are sold
Bloodletting The practice of draining blood ; believed to release illness
Caduceus Often confused as the symbol of the medical field; is a staff with two entwined snakes and two wings on top
Dogma A principle or set of principles laid down by an authority as incontrovertibly true
Hippocratic Oath An oath taken by physicians concerning the ethics and practice of medicine
Inpatient pharmacies Pharmacies in a hospital or institutional setting
Laudanum A mixture of opium and alcohol used to treat dozens of illnesses through the 1800s
Leeches A type of segmented worm with suckers that attaches to the skin of a host and engorges itself on the host's blood
Maggots Fly larvae that feed on dead tissue; used in medicine to clean wounds not responding to routine antibiotics
Medicine The science and art dealing with the maintenance of health and the prevention, alleviation, or cure of disease
Opioid Any agent that binds to opioid receptors
Opium An analgesic that is made from the Poppy plant
Pharmacist Person who dispenses drugs and counsels patients on medication use and any interactions it may have with food and other drugs
Pharmacy A place were drugs are sold
Pharmacy clerk Person who assists the Pharmacist at the front counter of the pharmacy; the person who accepts payment for medications
Pharmacy Technician Person who assists a Pharmacist by filling prescrriptions and performing other nondiscretionary tasks
PTCB Pharmacy Technician Certification Board- Issues a national exam for Pharmacy Technicians 1995
Shaman A person who holds a high place of honor in a tribe as a healer and spiritual mediator
Staff of Asclepius The symbol of the medical profession; it is a wingless staff with one snake wrapped around it
Trephining A practice of making an opening in the head to allow disease to leave the body
Aristotle Greek scientist, and philosopher.responsible for many advances in biology and medicine. Experimented on animals. Described much of huan anatomy from animals he dissected.Brain heart lungs and blood vessels.

Gerhard Domagk Devoloped sulfonamides and synthetic antibiotics. sulfanomides was discovered from a chemical dye found to inhibit bacterial growth. 3 S's Sulfanomide, soil, synthetic. 1938 WW2
Alexander Fleming Scottish physicisian and bacteriologist. Discovered penicillin, the first antibiotic. contaminated a plate of bacteria w mold 1928.
Claudius Galen Greek physician, proved that blood flows through arteries rather than air balanced diet, exercising , good hygine followed in the foot steps of Hippoctrates. wrote over 100 books 3PDA(physiology, pathology, pharmacology, diagnosis, anatomy.
Hippocrates Greek physician and philosopher, considered to be the father of medicine. balancing the 4 elements was linked to good helth. Imbalancing the humors of the body resultd in illness. Wrote Corpus Hippocratium. believed in natural healing by resting, and eat
Gregor Mendel Scientist and monk, known as the father of genetics pea plants.
Florence Nightingale Nurse who was reponsible for improving the sanitary conditions at a British base hospital believed in clenliness and started hospital and school for nurses
Paracelsus Swiss physician, philosopher, and scinetist. Introduce laudanum used to deaden pain. parachute Treat patients with one medication at a time.
Louis Pasteur Fench scientist, discovered several vaccines and invented pasteurization. anthrax vaccine.
