| acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) | a viral disease that renders the immune system |
| allergen | any substance that causes an allergic reaction |
| allergies | an altered or acquired state of sensitivity: abnormal reaction of the body to substances normally harmless |
| anaphylaxis | a hypersensitive reaction of the body to a foreign protien or a drug; the term implies symptoms severe enough to produce serious shock, even death |
| antibodies | protein substance carried by cells to counteract the effect of an antigen |
| antibody-mediated | humoral immunity: when antibodies and complement work together destroy antigens |
| antigen | any immunizing agent that, when introduced into the body, may produce antibodies |
| autoimmune | a condition wherein the person's antibodies react against their normal tissues |
| basophils | granulated white blood cells |
| benign | nonmalignant: not cancerous |
| biopsy | excision of a small piece of tissue for microscopic examination |
| brachytherapy | a type or radiation therapy that places radioactive isotopes in or near the tumor |
| cancerous | refers to a malignant growth |
| carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) | a tumor marker that can be detected in the blood when tested |
| carcinogens | cancer-causing agents |
| carcinoma | a malignant tumor from epithelial tissue |
| cell-mediated | direct cellular response to antigens |
| chemotherapy | the use of chemical agents in the treatment of disease, usually associated with cancer therapy |
| clonal | the duplicated copy: with immunity it is cells produced to attack antigens |
| complement | a group about 20 inactive enzyme proteins present in the blood |
| corticosteroids | hormones used to treat inflammation |
| cytokine | a non antibody protein of the immune system that regulates immune response |
| cytotoxic | capable of destroying cells |

| desensitization | the process of making an individual less susceptible to allergens. |

| eosinophils | a white blood cell or cellular structure that stains readily with with the acid stain eosin; specially an eosinophilic leukocyte |

| immunoglobulin | a large protein molecule that assist in the immune system in all organisms |

| interferon | a lymphokine that helps regulate the activities of macrophage and natural killer cells |
| interleukin | a substance that is message between leukocytes |
| intracellular | within the cell |
| leukemia | a form of blood cancer in which white blood cells may become malignant and multiply inside the bone marrow or lymphatic tissue |
| lupus erythematosus | a chronic automatic autoimmune disease that causes changes in the immune system |
| lymphedema | excess lymph fluid the tissue |
| lymphocyte | a type of white blood cell |
| lymphokine | a cytokine produce by a T-cell |
| lymphoma | a tumor of the lymphatic tissue |
| macrophage | a phagocytic cell that destroys antigens |

| metastasis | movement of cancer cells from one part of the body to another |
| monoclonal | a laboratory-created hybrid cell that produces antibodies |
| monocyte | single nucleated cells that leave the blood and enter into tissues to become macrophages |
| monogamous | an exclusive relationship between two people |
| monokine | a cytokine produced by macrophages or monocytes |
| mutation | cellular change caused by an influence |
| neoplasm | medical term for new growth can be benign or malignant |
| neutrophils | a granulated white blood cell |
| oncogenes | a gene in a tumor cell |
| opportunistic | seizing the opportunity; taking advantage of the situation |
| permeable | capable of being penetrated; allowing entrances |
| phagocyte | a white blood cell that engulfs and destroys antigens |
| prostaglandin | group of chemical substances secreted by mast cells or basophils or basophils that constricts smooth muscles in some organs |
| psychoneuroimmunology | a science studying the connection between the brain, behavior, behavior, and immunity |
