| denial | a refusal to believe or accept; disowning |
| displacement | the transfer of emotions about one person or situation to another person or situation |
| distort | to misrepresent; to twist out of usual shape |
| empirically | based on observations or experiment |
| incongruent | lacking harmony or agreement |
| intellectualization | to employ reasoning to avoid confrontation or stressful situations |
| interpret | to explain, translate; to determine the meaning |
| intuition | the immediate knowing or learning of something without the conscious use of reasoning |
| malinger | to pretend to be sick to avoid dealing with situations that are unpleasant or cause anxiety |
| perception | awareness through the senses; the receipt of impressions; consciousness |
| projection | a defense mechanism of trying to blame another for one's own inadequacies |
| rationalization | to explain on rational grounds, to devise plausible explanations for one's acts |
| reference points | in communication, the sum total of values, culture, education, and experiences that an individual holds that affect the way that message is received |
| regression | a defense mechanism of retreating to the thoughts and actions of an earlier, "safer" age |
| repression | to force painful ideas or impulses into the subconscious |
| stress | to put pressure on; emphasize; urgency; tension, strained exertion |
| sublimation | used unconsciously to express socially unacceptable instinctive drives or impulses in approved and acceptable ways |
| suppression | in psychology, describes a condition in which the person becomes purposely involved in a project or work to avoid a painful situation. |
