| Insula | generally consisted of a group of building or one building, a block in the city |
| forum | Latin for market place or square |
| amphora | a clay vessel used for liquids, usually with 2 handles |
| atrium | entry court to Roman houses, with a central hole in the roof |
| caldarium | hot room in the baths |
| Capitolium | Temple of Jupiter in the forum |
| Aediles | officials who looked after public buildings including temples |

| Duumviri | the two men, the most important elected town officeholders |

| tepidarium | warm rooms in baths |
| tabernae | booths, small workshops, stalls |
| peristyle | colonnade around a garden |
| Macellum | food market |
| mosaic | a pattern or picture made with small squared stone or glass |
| palaestra | a sports field, exercise area |
| lupinar | brothel |
| Mensa ponderaria | measuring table in the forum, displaying official weights and measures |
