acute | sharp, severe; having a rapid onset, severe symptoms, and a short course; not chronic |
airway | the path that air follows to get into and out of the lung |
ammonia | strong-smelling inhalants used to revive a person who has fainted; also known as ammonia inhalants or spirits of ammonia |
aspiration | removal by suction |
cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) | a combination of rescue breathing and chest compressions delivered to victims thought to be in cardiac arrest |
cessation | ceasing or discontinuing |
chronic | continuing a long time, returning; not acute |
coma | an abnormal deep stupor from which a person cannot be aroused by external stimuli |
compressions | to exert force against, press |
consciousness | awareness, full knowledge of what is in one's own mind |
coroner | an official who investigates a sudden, suspicious, or violent death to determine the cause. In some communities the position has been replaced by the medical examiner |
diabetic ketoacidosis | a complication of diabetes that occurs when the body cannot use glucose as a fuel source because the body has scanty or no insulin and fat is used instead, resulting in ketone metabolites. |

emergency | an unexpected occurrence or situation demanding immediate action |
emergency medical services (EMS) | a group that provides out-of-hospital acute medical care and/or transport to definitive care to patients experiencing a medical emergency |
emergency preparedness | actions taken in anticipation of an emergency to facilitate rapid, effective , and appropriate response to the situation |
exhaustion | extreme fatigue |
flushed | sudden reddish coloration of the skin |
frostbite | a condition where localized damage is caused to skin and other tissues due to extreme cold |
heat cramps | painful, brief muscle cramps that occur during exercise or work in a hot environment; muscles may spasm or jerk involuntarily |
heat exhaustion | a condition whose symptoms may include heavy sweating and a rapid pulse, as result of the body overheating |
heat stroke | a severe condition caused by impairment of the body's temperature-regulating abilities resulting from prolonged exposure to excessive heat |
hyperglycemia | increased blood sugar, as in diabetes |
hypoglycemia | deficiency of sugar in the blood |
hypothermia | below normal body temperature |
ingested | to eat |
insulin shock | a condition of excess insulin or lack of blood sugar |
intubation | insertion of a tube into the larynx for entrance of air |
life threatening | used to describe diseases or conditions where the likelihood of death is high |
medical emergency | an injury or illness that is acute and poses an immediate risk to a person's life or long-term health |
myocardial infarction (MI) | blockage of a coronary artery that interrupts the flow of blood to the heart muscle |
obstructed | blocked |
poison | a substance that, if taken internally or applied externally, is a threat to life |
postmortem | pertaining to or occurring during the period after death; common term for autopsy |
prophylactic | preventing disease |
seizure | a sudden, uncontrolled electrical disturbance in the brain. |
severe | extensive, advanced |
subtle | so slight as to be difficult to detect or describe; elusive |
sudden | happening without warning or in a short space of time |
syncope | fainting; a transient form of unconsciousness |
trauma | any injury, physical or mental |
universal emergency medical identification | worn by patients who have conditions that could have emergency episodes, such as heart conditions, diabetes, epilepsy, allergies, or laryngectomy, to alert health workers of the patients' conditions when they cannot do so on their own |
urgent | requiring immediate attention |
