| acne | a skin condition that occurs when your hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. |
| albino | a person who lacks pigment in the skin, hair and eyes |
| alopecia | the loss of hair; baldness |
| carbuncle | a staphylococcal infection following furunculosis characterized by a deep abscess of severe follicles with multiple draining points |
| constrict | to narrow; to become smaller because of contraction of a spincter muscle |
| dermatitis | an inflammation of the skin, often the results of an irritant |
| dermis | true skin |
| dilate | to enlarge, expand in size; to increase the size of an opening |
| eczema | a non-contagious skin disease characterized by dry, red, itchy and scaly skin |
| epidermis | the outer layer of the skin; literally "over the skin" |
| erythema | diffuse redness over the skin because of capillary congestion and dilation of the superficial capillaries |
| follicle | a small excretory duct, sac or tubular gland; a hair follicle. |
| folliculitis | a staphylococcal infection of a hair follicle |
| furuncle | the medical term for a boil |
| herpes simplex | a medical term for fever blister, an acute viral infection of the face, mouth or nose. |
| herpes zoster | the medical term for shingles, an acute viral infection of dorsal root ganglia. |
| integumentary | the skin; a covering |
| keloid | an overgrowth of new skin tissues; a scar |
| lesion | an injury or wound; a circumscribed area of pathologically altered tissue |
| Lyme disease | a disease caused by a spirochete that is carried by the deer tick. |
| macule | a discolored spot or patch on the skin neither elevated nor depressed |
| melanin | a pigment that gives color to the skin, hair and eyes. |
| melanocytes | cells that produce the pigment of the skin |
| papule | red, elevated area on the skin |
| pediculosis | the scientific name for lice |
| perception | awareness through the senses; the receipt of impressions; consciousness |
| pigment | any coloring matter |
| psoriasis | a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by scaly patches. |
| pustule | small elevation of the skin filled with lymph or pus |
| receptors | peripheral nerve ending of the sensory nerve that responds to stimuli |
| sebaceous | an oily, fatty matter; glands secreting such matter |
| sebum | oily secretion of the sebaceous glands of the skin |
| slough | to cast off, as dead tissue |
| subcutaneous | beneath the skin |
| transdermal | through the skin |
| urticaria | an inflammation condition characterized by the eruption of wheals that are associated with severe itching |
| verrucae | warts; small, circumscribed elevations of the skin formed by hypertrophy of the papillae |
| vesicle | a small sac or bladder containing fluid; a small, blister-like elevation on the skin containing serous fluid. |
| viral shedding | that time when a virus is the most active and most contagious |
| wheals | more or less round and evanescent elevation of the skin, white in center with a pale red edge, accompanied by itching |
| whorl | a type of fingerprint in which the central papillary ridges turn through at least one complete circle. |
