Medical Terminology
Rules of Word Building
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Prefix | This is the word part located at the front of a word *Note that there is not always a prefix in a medical word |
Suffix | this is the word part located at the back of the word. |
Word Root | This is the main part or foundation of the word. All medical words have at least one word root. The word root usually indicates a body part or organ. |
Combining Vowel | This is a vowel that is added to a word root. It is usually the letter "o" (Not always though!). The purpose of the combining vowel is to make the word easier to pronounce. |
Combining Form | The combining form is simply a word root added to a combining vowel. Example: gastr + o = gastr/o (word root) + (vowel) = (combining form) The vowel used in a combining form is called a "combining vowel" |
Rule # 1 of Word Building | Rule 1: A word root links to a suffix that begins with a vowel If the suffix begins with a vowel (A, E, I, O, U) NO combining form is needed |
Rule #2 of Word Building | Rule 2: A combining form links to a suffix that begins with a consonant If a suffix begins with a consonant, a combining vowel (usually 'o') is needed. |
Rule #3 of Word Building | Rule 3: A combining form links a word root to another word root to form a compound word EVEN IF the next root begins with a vowel. |
